The Ultimate Instagram Hashtag Cheat Sheet
Oh, the ubiquitous hashtag. In the age of social media, it seems like we've learned to hashtag everything in our #lives. Whether you're a social media marketing pro or you're new to using Instagram for business, you know that using the right hashtags or combination of hashtags is the key to becoming more discoverable, and, therefore, to exposing your brand, blog, or book to a larger audience.
What is an Instagram Hashtag?
An Instagram hashtag is a word or phrase comprised of letters, numbers, and/or emoji preceded by a pound symbol (#.) Hashtags are used to categorize content. Put another way, hashtags allow anyone interested in topics you're posting about to find your images on Instagram.
How to Increase Instagram Likes, Comments, and Followers
The key to Instagram success is to make sure that people who have the same niche and interests as you do can find your posts. That's where hashtags come in. But how do you know which hashtags to use? You could spend hours looking up popular hashtags or....
YOU CAN STEAL.
No, it's not really stealing..it's more like borrowing. If you're trying to figure out what hashtags to use, you can spend hours chasing down the right keywords and experimenting with which tags attract the target audience you're hoping to attract, or you can save yourself an enormous amount of time by borrowing the hashtags used by others in your niche. How? Start by using the tried-and-true list of hashtags below. These are the hashtags I start with or use for my clients.
Not sure how to start? Below is an example from my Instagram account.
For this very pink photo, I start with the hashtag #pinkaesthetic. I added it to my image, and then clicked on it.
Once clicked, Instagram shows me other posts using the #pinkaesthetic hashtag, with the most popular on top. I chose the one in the middle...and....
I found that it's from an account with over 50,000 followers, pink fashion site The Pink Collar Life. I can then see what other hashtags to use that are related to the niche I'm hoping to attract: in this case, lovers of images and designs with lots of pink.
So you see how starting with one hashtag can lead to finding others and, eventually, to finding the right hashtags for the images you're posting. This method works for any type of account. Now that you know how to find the right hashtags for your niche, all you need are some hashtags to get your search started.
